Wetlands 1
I. Gigapan
This lesson uses the Hawk's Bluff area of the Savannas Preserve State Park as its core. Let's go there and explore a Gigapan showing a wetland. The snapshots have narrated slideshows. If necessary, review the lesson on how to navigate a Gigapan. Zoom in, pan around, explore the snapshots with their recorded slideshows.

II. Snapshot Information and Images
Go to the menu bar and click on Lesson 13 to get the fly-out menu entitled "Wetlands 1 Snapshot Information and Images" for the words and images contained in the Gigapan snapshots
III. Reference Photos
Lessons 11 through 14 have no reference photos.
IV. Field Trip
Go explore a wetlands habitat. A list of suggested sites is found on the tab in the menu bar after Lesson 16.
Take pictures of ten plants you identify. A total of ten species photos to cover all the wetland lessons is adequate. Remember: put the photos in a Word doc and send it to us. Please do not send photos as separate e-mail attachments.

IV. Practice
In botany the word "herb" means any non-woody plant. The word "serrate" means having a sawtooth edge. A leaflet is the part of a compound leaf that looks like a small leaf.
1. What wetland herb has erect inflorescences with purple flowers? This herb is related to Water-Hyacinth.
2. What common, large wetland grass has a narrow erect inflorescence and leaves characteristically broad where they join the stem?
3. What "grass" is really a big serrate-leaved sedge?
4. What wetland fern is a severe invasive exotic?
5. What common fern does not have to live in swamps? The leaves are serrate, and the spore cases form two tracks on the undersides of leaflets?
6. What sedge is an invasive exotic, forming floating mats?
7. What wetland herb has white flowers with three delicate petals? Some of them make "potatoes."
8. What vine is abundant and aggressive? The leaves are somewhat shaped like arrowheads.
9. What herb might be in your lawn, or it might be in your yard?
10. What canine herb has fine leaves like dill and smell strongly when crushed?
